Auckland – Whitianga
Following breakfast at the hotel, travel south over the Bombay Hills turning east to travel around the Firth of Thames and into the relatively untouched beauty of the Coromandel Peninsula.
Rustic, relaxed and unspoiled, the Coromandel is one of New Zealand’s best-loved holiday destinations. The rugged volcanic hills are cloaked in native rainforest, and more than 400 kilometres of spectacular coastline promises you can find the beach of your dreams. On the west coast, there’s a never-ending parade of beaches, coves and harbours lined with pohutukawa trees (a red flowering native of New Zealand). The eastern side of the Coromandel is furnished with an amazing collection of white sand and surf beaches, and an impressive, heavily forested mountain range runs right up the middle of the peninsula.
Enroute, stop to enjoy a 1-hour return trip on Driving Creek Railway, a scenic narrow gauge mountain railway, on which you travel through regenerating and replanted native kauri forest whilst unique pottery sculptures line the track. The train includes 2 spirals, 3 short tunnels, 5 reversing points and several large viaducts as it climbs up the hill to the Eyefull Tower. At the top there are panoramic views out over the island-studded Hauraki Gulf. Before your return trip your driver will explain about the man who originally built the railway to bring clay to his potteries and wood to fire the kilns.
You will then continue (stopping for lunch – own cost) via Matarangi to the popular town of Whitianga.
Upon arrival in Whitianga, check into your accomodation and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.

Although Cathedral Cove is one of the highlights of this tour, there is more dramatic scenery to discover on the Pacific coastline, including Orua Sea Cave, Champagne Rocks, isolated islands, and pristine sandy beaches.
This afternoon, travel to Hot Water Beach, where warm springs bubble up through the sand, and when the tide is right you can dig out your very own ‘spa’ pool for a wallow in the warm waters.

This evening visit Tamaki Maori Village for Te Pā Tū. The evening experience and feast is aligned to and changes with the maramataka (Māori lunar calendar). Feast on Māori song, tradition, and divine seasonal kai (cuisine) within the forest Pā (village) amidst towering Tawa trees, blazing bonfires, and forest-formed amphitheatre. Hākari (feasting) begins with forest horotai (canapes) and culminates in a lavish 4-course fusion feast. Our small group had an unforgettable experience, first in the incredible Hunza Valley and then at one of the all time great Test matches. The Not Out Travel service is flexible and customisable – not a hint of the dreaded ‘one size fits all’ approach of some of the larger tour firms.
