Why visit New Zealand?

Everyone knows the prowess of the mighty All Blacks, the emotion of the Haka and the taste of a fine New Zealand wine but to visit this country in person is to experience a culture and scenery that is, genuinely, unique. You can truly immerse yourself in all that uniqueness in the Test venues of Mt Maunganui and Wellington, also in the pre tour to the Bay of Islands, north of Auckland, and the post extension to the South Island.

I spent 5 years of ‘our’ winters living In NZ as a cricketing wife and have done several tours in recent years as a cricketing mother and I can guarantee you that this tour gives an experience of why New Zealand is, in my opinion, just unmissable, making this England Cricket Tour of New Zealand 2023 something you do not want to miss out on.

Being February, the best summer month to visit, we won’t see the All Blacks in action but the Black Caps will display 100% of the fair play, friendly but fierce competitiveness New Zealand sport thrives on – and these qualities also cross into everyday life which welcomes visitors, wherever you go. There’s a rare ‘openness’ to New Zealand as a country and to New Zealanders themselves.

Being an outdoor lover myself, I count New Zealand as my second home, and it’s the unspoiled and dramatically varying scenery, along with the wildlife, that grips me every time I visit. At Mt Maunganui we are staying just a stone’s throw from the bay, the beach and Mt Maunganui itself! On the journey between the Tests, we take in the geo-thermal landscape surrounding Rotorua, where the mineral colours will literally stop you in your tracks, let alone experiencing the eruption of a geyser – putting up with the sulphurous smell is well worth it!!

I never tire of seeing the Māori culture and traditions in action and absorbing the differing history of the regions. A visit to the Tamaki Māori Village puts you right at the heart of their cultural pride.

On to Taupo, where we come across the largest lake in NZ and the impressive Huka Falls and this is just whilst travelling from the first Test to the second Test. It’s almost unreal…. that word unique again.

For those of you joining us on the South Island tour (after the completion of the Tests) you can add the stunning fjords and glaciers of Milford Sound to the whole experience, seeing them up close on a captivating boat trip.

The wildlife continually throws up surprises. Dare I mention a bungee jump opportunity… or maybe jet boating…. or on a calmer note, just sampling that world famous wine in stunning surroundings. I’ve experienced all these things myself (I will admit to only watching the bungee jumping!) and to me, the combination of great sport and venues with the diverse beauty of this land and its’ culture, is almost too special for words to do it justice.
